Pillar Coral Point Roatan

coral Roatan

Rightfully named for the abundance of pillar coral rising grandiosely from the reef wall, Pillar Coral Point lies near the Half Moon Bay on the leeward side of the island. The gradual sloping reef starts its descent from 15 feet of water and meanders down to more than 100 feet. A mooring buoy protects the coral from anchor damage and the point of attention of this dive is the abundance of pillar coral. Pillar coral grow specifically well at the level of 30- 40 feet. The forest or pillar coral is superb in this shallow water region. The dive is easy and one simply needs to descend the mooring line, floating out to the wall which lies a few seconds away and then descending another 15- 20 feet. Striking ridges, small holes and coral hangs comprises the wall. Probing into the intricacies provides one an experience of enchanting expectation. A mixture of rich coral gardens and pillar coral decorate the region and young spotted drums hide under ledges. Fairy basslets direct their bodies towards the luminous sand patches or sunlight and queen triggerfish swim across in majestic fashion. The queen triggerfish is one of the most interesting and beautiful to encounter. It is blue-green in colour with dazzling blue rays being emanated from the eyes and extending from its snout to pectoral fins. The name originates from a ”trigger” device which is an altered dorsal fin that can lock into a vertical position empowering them to stand absolutely motionless when they are threatened. A second dorsal fin enables them to swim and they make an interesting sight to behold as they glide by. A wide variety of marine life exists here both for divers and snorkelers to observe. It may be noted that a group of small invertebrates such as Christmas tree worms, flamingo tongues and featherdusters reside within the hard and soft corals. The Pillar Collar Point is also a home to trunkfish, anemones, sponges, nudibranchs, arrow crabs, damsels and squirrelfish.
