Peter's Place Roatan
This diving site is made up of a rather deep mini wall that is renowned for the presence of spotted eagle rays and sea turtles. For divers who dig turtles and rays, this is the best place to dive. Located on the west of the Bear's Den, Peter's Place lies on the lee side of the island. This site is demarcated with a typical spur and a groove arrangement of Bay Islands. However there are fewer grooves than spurs here in this region. The mooring buoy rests at 50 feet above deep reef surface. The reef crest then falls to the bottom of nearly 130 feet. Diving outlines are normally formed in the extent of a depth of 80- 100 feet. Descending from the mooring line, one may continue to drift for a short distance reaching the wall and swim towards the right from the wall. The focal point of the dive is the spectacular sight of green turtles, loggerhead turtles and rays. Huge spotted eagle rays weighing between 400-500 pounds can be found here.
They are identified with splendid white circles or spots coating their dark bodies. Spotted eagle rays are commonly seen floating by on an light flight and they may also be found scouring the reef areas or seagrass beds searching for mollusks which make up their diet. The reef is also inhabited by other marine animals. A great number of barrel and tube sponges divert water containing plankton into their bodies. A number of other sponges shelter other lives and a glance inside a sponge often reveals small govies, shrimp or arrow crabs. Schools of creole wrasses and blue chromis can be observed above and along the reef. Exquisite black and white coloured black durgeons hover around the reef. Peter's place is truly a diver's paradise tempting the diver to dive over and over again.
