Oakridge / Punta Gorda Roatan

beach roatan

Oakridge is located on the southern end of the island. It is a small and quaint community with a heavy Afro-antillean influence. The access to this part of the Island was somewhat determinate, which is why Oakridge has not altered much in time. Various communities inhabit the southern side of the island, bordering the coast, with Jonesville, Oakridge and Calabash Cay. All of these communities possess marvellous scenery and are connected to eachother by a series of canals snaking through mangrove forests. This area provides splendid fishing opportunities. The Reef House Resort offers first class accommodations and restaurant services although tourist service is scarce here. The Reef house Resort is located on a small key across from the main dock at Oakridge. The Blue Bayou hotel is also located here. The Tropical Beach Resort consisting of a small private establishment with 5 cabins is located at the Calabash Bight. This resort extends first rate fishing and outstanding offshore diving. The Roatan Ranch is also situated in this neighbourhood offering horseback riding excursions in the area between Calabash Bight and Paya Bay. An English speaking guide with good horses is a welcoming aspect of this tour.

The Garifuna community of unta Gorda is located on the opposite side of the Island in the northern coast. This community is the only original Garifuna community on Roatan. Punta Gorda was actually the first Garifuna settlement in Central America. In 1796, the British deported the Black Caribs or Garifunas who came to settle in Punta Gorda. The carnival eery year on the 12th of April is celebrated to honour their first arrival to Roatan. YUBU is a new cultural attration in this part of the island. Here one has the opportunity of meeting Garifuna people, be a part of their exotic dances and culture and buy handmade souvenirs. YUBU is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. 5.00 USD per person is charged as an entrance fee. About 20 minutes from the east French Harbour, just before the entrance to Punta Gorda lies this interesting cultural attraction in a nice thatched building. Without making a stop at YUBU, a visit to the eastern side of the island is not complete.

Affordable diving packages are available in the Oak Bridge Diving resort on the island. This resort is located on the western end of Oakridge offering a great view of Jonesville. A colourful fishing community, Jonesville has one of the most popular bars on the island called The Hole in the Wall. The bar is accessible only by water thus one will have to hire one of the dorys that function as water taxis. The Hole in The Wall is also recommended for a very popular Sunday BBQ which starts at 1:00 pm. This area is abundant with natural reefs since this is probably the least dived spot on the island. Communities like Camp Bay, Port Royal, Old Port Royal and others can be reached by a trail lying further westwards. However there is an absolute lack of infrastructural facilities in these communities thus making them appropriate only for tourists seeking raw adventure. Beautiful beaches and scenery totally devoid of other tourists can be one of the rewards for the adventuresome tourist who might jus dare to venture out into these communities.
