Lighthouse Reef Roatan

coral Roatan

This diving site is prevalent for the learning divers and novice snorkelers. Lighthouse Reef is located close to the Half Moon Bay, across from the lighthouse on the northern side of the island (this is where it gets its name from). Shallow diving with an importance attached to a complete magnificent array of marine activity is available here. A mooring buoy is placed on the edge of a sandy basin cushioned in the center of the reef crest. The reef is 15 feet deep at its top and the base of the sand field stretches down to 25 feet. Encompassing the sand, is a wreath of coral adorned by soft and hard corals. One of the soft corals found here are the sea feathers which add a characteristic earthly forest environment to the territory walls. One might spot a row of clams or lima stretching out its tentacles from its fiery tinted body cavity, from the cracks of some coralline growth. A reef wall can be reached by leaving the sand patch and continuing a few feet ahead. This wall plunges down to 150 feet and is comprised of typical ridges and sand canyons. Due to lack of current or surge, a diver can conveniently advance along the wall in either direction. There is a variety of marine life here with fissures, coral gardens, sandy plots and ledges, creating a home for a host of fish and invertebrates. Under cracks and rocks reside arrow crabs and spiral anemones. Within tangles of long appendages of the spiral anemone exists pistol shrimp in a symbiotic relationship with the anemones.

Lizardfish, angelfish, wrasses, harlequin bass, porcupinefish and number of other aquatic creatures share this environment. A small relative of groupers, harlequin bass, have the same physical characteristics as groupers but differ in size. They can be spotted with keen eyes at least once on a dive. Harlequin bass are patterned roughly with brown uneven spots with vertical black bands and the abdominal area is white in colour. They are bottom dwelling creatures favouring sandy patches.
