Hole in the Wall Roatan

coral Roatan

An extraordinary deep dive for advanced divers is what distinguishes the Hole in the Wall. This diving site is located towards the east of the Lighthouse Reef and lies near Half Moon Bay on the northern side of the island. A mooring buoy is present beneath which the reef crest begins at a depth of 15 feet. One can reach the hole by descending the mooring line, turning right and by following a corresponding course or by continuing around the canyon towards a chain of small caverns located at the mouth of the canyon. After the visit to the caverns, one may easily cut across the canyon orifice to return to the mooring line. One may contemplate on snorkeling over the border of the canyon to the hole to save air and bottom time. Floating on the rim of the hole, one may observe that the hole likens a large funnel, the mouth of which constricts into a tube with just 25-foot width and stretches into depths of 400- 500 feet. The caverns are an awesome place to examine fissures and niches that contain a wide variety of nocturnal marine life. The hole itself does not house abundance of aquatic life but there are large branches of black coral to admire and deep pelagic species may be encountered. Aquatic life becomes ample towards the reef crest with plinths of hard and soft corals occupying the region together with species of shallow water fish. It is important to keep in mind that it is a deep dive and careful observation of the gauges and bottom time should necessarily be maintained.
