Herbie's Fantasy Roatan
Herbie's Fantasy is characterised by a
sensational shallow dive. A diver can either watch or assist in feeding
the numerous species of grouper or the native green or spotted moray
eels. This site is located on the main reef chain, right off the West
Bay. The current is very less marked by just a surge making it an
excellent site for both divers and snorkelers. Just a few feet below
the water's surface lies the reef crest. The mooring buoy is located
near the sand canyon where most of the action commences. A wall slants
gently to 50 feet and an adjoining sand canyon grounds out at 30 feet.
Small caverns and boulder corals fill up the sand canyon, which
accomodates ledges, invertebrates and sheltering fish. Advancing from
the mooring buoy, a diver can swim along the wall to the left, reaching
the sand canyon not very far from the buoy. Resident groupers and
morays wait patiently to be fed in the sand canyon. Sardines are often
brought by divemasters to satiate the appetites of these groupers.
Magnificent forests of gorgeous elkhorn and staghorn corals lie close
to the surface. These species of coral are dominant in this area
co-existing with few other coral species. Dazzling azure sponge vases
which are characteristic of Bay Island diving are present farther down
in the water.
Copious amounts of shallow reef fish and other critters swim the waters of this area. Hordes of snappers, parrotfish, blue chromis, butterflyfish, blue tangs, damsels and grunts live on small crustaceans, corals and algae. One might even spot a dashing flamingo tongue or a nudibranch. The main source of sand on the reefs are parrotfish which use their parrot-like beaks to crack open coral in search of algae emitting a crunching sound. The parrotfish exhibits vivid colours varying from species to species. Parrotfishes are a usual sight on most reefs.
