Eel Garden Roatan

coral Roatan

The Eel garden presents more than the regular sharp drop-offs. This site is located just off the West Bay and is a quite shallow reef slightly sloping eastward. One may think of this site as a novice ski slope with several sand plots. One is mistaken if one thinks that this site is devoid of marine life because it is here that the garden eels live together with rays, lizardfish flounders, sailfin blennies and goatfish. A mooring buoy at the top of the reef is only 15 feet from the surface and from there the reef slopes down to 100 feet. The reef continues to slope on to a wall that descends farther down. The main feature of this dive is the sand flats at the 50 foot level. Large colonies of garden eels are seen here and files of eels extend their bodies out from their sandy holes. Garden eels are shy creatures and to observe them, a diver must make advances very carefully and slowly. Once they are threatened by the approach, they retreat in waves leaving behind a cloud of sand. It is a cumbersome effort to capture an eel within the shutter of a camera since they are very elusive but patience sometimes pay a diver with an unusual shot of the garden eel.

Coral outgrowths, clefts and multitudinous shallow reef fish add to this fantastic exhibition of marine culture. Abundance of angelfish, damselfish, redspotted hawkfish, and hamlets swim the waters of this site. It can be noted that patches of algae grow profusely wherever a damselfish has traced her territory. Damselfish are an aggressive kind, fearless when it comes to defending their territory or their eggs.
