WelCome To Roatan Diving

Roatan is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. Formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan, the island is about 36 lush green mountainous miles long and less than 8 kilometers broad at its widest part. Roatan has three major towns namely, Coxen Hole, French Harbour and Oak Ridge. These three towns are the most populated places on the island.

The island consists of three municipalities, Jose Santos Guardiola located in the east, Roatan which also includes the Cayos Cochinos in the south western end and Oak Ridge which is the capital of Jose Santos Guardiola municipality. A paved road strays along most of the distance of the island then continues further into gravel.

Further towards the end, the eastern side of the island is separated by a serpentine channel, twisting its way through the mangroves and is around 15 meters wide. The part of the island that is cut by the channel from the main island of Roatan is called Helene or Santa Elena in Spanish. The eastern end of the island is strewn by some satellite islands called Morat, Barbabretta, Pigeon Cay, and Barefoot Cay. Up until 2001, Barefoot Cay was known as Burial Key but it is presently owned for private purposes like luxury resorts that are quite popular among celebrities.

Since Roatan is situated near the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea, it becomes a significant cruise ship and scuba diving destination in Honduras. Roatan is best known for its tourism and it is its major economic sector although fishing is also an essential source of income for the locals. Typically, Roatan is proud of its freshwater streams gushing down from the mountains, and of various diving sites that are located everywhere on this spectacular island's borderline.
